2009
June 2009: Puerto Rico is selected as the official host of the 51st Congress of the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), to be held at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in October 2012. This is the first time that ICCA’s largest and most important annual event is hosted in the Caribbean, expecting to bring over 800 delegates from at least 70 countries for the three-day congress.

June 2009: The Puerto Rico Convention Center is the site of the annual gathering of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, bringing more than 4,000 journalist-delegates to the Island.

July 2009: More than 2,500 delegates arrive in Puerto Rico to attend the annual gathering of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). In addition to an infusion of $1.5 million into the local economy, the event represents one of the largest gatherings of individuals dedicated to the improvement of Hispanic Americans.

October 2009: As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Puerto Rico Convention Center is illuminated in pink on the same weekend of the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s annual Race for the Cure 5k event.

November 2009: The Puerto Rico welcomes more than 2,000 delegates of the XV Annual Congress of the Asociación de Pediatría (ALAPE) to the Center. A major citywide convention, the group represents 5,000 room nights for area hotels and an economic impact into Puerto Rico’s local economy of $3.1 million.

December 2009: The opening of the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino marks the addition of a dedicated headquarter hotel, featuring 503 guest rooms for delegates of the Puerto Rico Convention Center. In addition, the new property, considered an urban oasis, offers more than 35,000 square feet of function space.
